The purpose of this project was to dive into the reason book are banned. Some are for reasons such as sexual content, hateful ideas, alternative lifestyles, profanity, etc. But there are reasons that books should not be banned, as we also researched throughout this project. I chose the book 'Lolita' by Vladimir Nabokov. It's about a man named Humbert Humbert who falls in love with his 12 year old daughter, and his thoughts about the situation of his forbidden, one sided love. It was banned in a few countries because of the sexual themes, but banning books never works and it simply made it more popular with the controversy.
This project was challenging because of how I haven't read anything in a while, it was hard to put myself in a schedule of reading every day. It was probably the most challenging book that I've read. The easiest part for me was explaining my book to people at exhibition because I thought it was a good book, and talking about something you like, such as my bookmark, is always really easy. The process of getting my bookmark to be something I did actually like, took a while. Through critique my bookmark did get better though. I made it more visually clean and appealing and added color to it as opposed to my first draft. I feel like the art I drew was really good and I am quite proud of it, especially because I didn't do the traditional bookmark shape.
On the topic of interacting with peers, I thought that commenting on other people's reading journals was a good way to get people to interact with each other and know what others are reading, as well as ask thought provoking questions to each other. And getting asked questions about your book really feels good in a way. I would like to share the enjoyment of that book with my peers. I would liked to have talked about the book to some people that also read it, but I did get to tell people about it at exhibition. I told people some of the highlights of the book and the strange parts of the main character, which got interesting but expected reactions from people.
If I could change something about this project, I would probably ask to get my bookmark printed earlier and also do my bookmark in a way that would allow me to get it laminated and printed out for me to hand out at exhibition. Overall though, I think I did good on the parts of this project except for the potluck, in which I wrote my paragraph about my food, but I forgot to actually bring the food I was supposed to.
