An integrated project from this year was mythological mobiles. They were mobiles that hung from the ceiling representing a myth we chose from our country of its origin. Here is the project description here.
In the beginning of this project we were assigned a region as well as two project partners. My partners, Rachel, Ethan and I got the Oceana/Australia region. I think we made great partners, but we did have some slight struggles with communication in which we fixed quickly. We worked great together, and everyone had their individual strengths. Ethan did amazing in the physics portion because he was great at doing torque and never gave up. A lot of other people asked him for help on their torque diagrams and he would always help them. Rachel was a really hard worker who I never saw off task. I think I did a good job painting my artifacts for the mobile.
In Humanities I learned about all different cultures through their myths. In the presentations I learned about a ton of countries, from their politics, to religion, to their geographic location, and especially their myths. I also searched for myths from my region as well, and found some interesting ones. My favorite one was Degei the Serpent God of Fiji. The Serpent God Degei apparently created all of the Earth as well as humans along with Turukawa the Hawk. I painted both of those characters on the mobile our group made.
The Physics portion of this project came from the torque diagrams of our mobiles we made. Using what we learned about torque, our group was able to create a diagram representing the forces acting upon our mobiles to create equilibrium. Ethan was really good at understanding torque and working through the multiple problems we had. The physics thinking we used was to check the work on the graph back again and again until all the numbers looked correct.
In Engineering, I learned how to use a scroll saw to cut the artifacts. I also learned about different types of paint and even some painting techniques I picked up on from watching other people paint.
After our mobile was all hung up and the torque diagram was finished I was very happy with what my amazing group and I had accomplished. Everyone showed great communication, as well as plenty of respect for each other's decisions. On pretty much every decision our group had to make we asked every member to see if it was okay with them or not. The group also showed responsibility by completing every single deadline.
