For career day, I shadowed a small RV Repair shop called RV Specialists. It was a run by a married couple. The owner of the business, Mr. Cooley, said that running a small business, you were on the clock 24/7. After 5 hours shadowing there, I learned that was true. Mr. Cooley told me how being the owner of a small business was all about putting out fires. Some examples of this were employees not showing up, human error, customers not being satisfied with a purchase or repair that the company made, etc., etc. These issues were all issues Mr. Cooley had to deal with as well as accounting and making phone calls. He stated that the most important skill to run a small business is that you need to "manage 8 things at once."

From this career day I've learned that if I want to have my own small business, I need to be smart in my business decisions, work incredibly hard, and value employees above all else. That is why RV Specialists has been able to keep it's doors open for business for more than 30 years. I also learned that I would rather not be in an office all day, and might want to choose a more exciting career.
