Muralism is a piece of art painted on a wall. Although that may just seem like another piece of art, murals have quite a history. In the 1920s, Mexican murals started with political and societal messages. (Kordic) Murals have been known to cover many issues, such as racism, injustices, poverty and greed, etc. Mural art moved north up into America with the Chicano Art movement to cover the issue of racism towards Filipino and Latino people.
The issue I’m choosing is overfishing in Coastal East Africa, because it is one of the richest places for fishing in the entire world (WWF); However, fishing boats from other countries have realized this and are now travelling to Coastal East Africa to fish illegally (WWF). These foreign boats take the majority of caught fish from the area and leave less for the locals. Overfishing is bad for fish populations because it can make them unstable, but it is also bad for the local economy (Strauss). So how can I solve this issue? One thing I am currently doing is creating an Instagram account to raise awareness on the issue of overfishing in Coastal East Africa. The account will inform people on the issue, and suggest donating to organizations like the World Wide Fund for Nature, that is supporting the local people solve the issue. |
The project went quite well because I hit all the deadlines and had time to spare, created a creative piece I could be proud of, and learned a lot, especially at the exhibition. And as well as the project went as a whole, there were some things that didn't go as well as I would have liked. At the exhibition, a parent asked me a few questions that I didn't know and wished I could answer for them. They were quite important questions too about the foundation that I was in support of in my position paper. Because of that, next time, I would research more than just what I needed for my essays, and make sure I’m getting my information from unbiased and reliable sources.
I grew in a few ways in this project, both in Spanish and in life. I grew in my Spanish pronunciation by reading my speech aloud to people, and my writing by writing and translating that speech one letter at a time. Reading the first paragraph of my speech aloud to people at exhibition really strengthened my confidence, and seeing their genuine interest made me want to educate them to the best of my ability on my chosen issue. However, the most important part of this project was that I was learning about an issue in another country that I can help to solve. I learned that local communities are struggling because of illegal actions taken by others, that the locals cannot do anything about. There are issues more important than mine that need actions taken against them, and learning that was what made this project especially beneficial.
