For my career day, I wanted to do something related to Performing Arts. The few school project I’ve done related to acting or playwriting have really struck a chord with me and I wanted to see if that was something I’d like to do as a career. Having limited contacts however, I didn't know who shadow. Eventually, I went to HTMNC to try to shadow a Performing Arts teacher. As I learned though from this experience, planned things can fall through for unforeseen reasons. For nobody’s fault in particular, the teacher I planned on shadowing wasn't there on Career Day. I ended up shadowing the HTMNC Digital Arts teacher instead.
I spent the day learning about the different projects the 6th grade students were doing. The project they were working on was called “Maker Market,” a project in which a student, or group of students, were able to choose what product they wanted to make, then display it at an exhibition. I helped the students choose what materials they would use to create their products. After conducting my interview with the Digital Arts teacher, I learned about how he came to be a High Tech Middle teacher, and why. I learned about how High Tech teachers make their projects. They are able to choose the project based on what the teacher and students would like to work on. I learned how to discipline students while also keeping them in a good mood.
I learned that I’m not very interested in teaching as a career. If I were to teach, it would be older students who are better at staying on task and taking care of themselves. Perhaps next year as an internship, I’ll pursue something else that is moreso related to theatre, if I still find myself interested. I have a few teachers at High Tech that I could contact and ask for options of people to shadow. If my internship is for approximately a month, I would just like for it to be something enjoyable and educational.
