Movements Around the World
By Fredo Gonzalez
For the project “Movements Around the World,” my partner and I had a tough time deciding what movement to focus on. Since the term “movement” is broad, there’s a lot that could be considered a movement. This ranges from the Anti-abortion movement to the Berlin Wall. My partner and I wanted something that could show history, art, and culture. Eventually, we decided on the Hippie Movement of the 1960s and 1970s. This had a huge part in the counterculture in the 1960s and 70s. It also had the potential to show art and history in a unique way. The Hippie Movement was a movement of people in the 1960s and 70s who didn't exactly conform to the culture back then. They were all about peace and love, showing a distaste for tragedy and war. They purposely isolated themselves from society and wore colorful or casual clothing to represent themselves.
The main part of this project was to create artifacts that represented our movement. The Hippie Movement had a lot of artistic themes, so I decided to create a painting. Painting was a unique experience for me because I’ve never seriously done it before. Beginning my painting, I had no idea where to start. There was a lot of pressure because I was scared of ruining the canvas I’d been given with amateurish painting skills. However, I’m glad I chose this option, because now I’ll be more confident with painting for new projects.
I learned a lot about other movements from my peer’s presentations. There were a few that stood out to me for a few reasons. The Vietnam War presentation sparked my interest because I learned about it from my own research about the Hippie Movement. If I learned about the Vietnam War, it would further educate me on hippies. Another movement I found particularly interesting was MKUltra. MKUltra was a secret illegal project by the US government, in which they tested drugs and mind control on unsuspecting people.
In the essay portion of this project, I got to practice writing in MLA format, a skill which I’ll frequently use for the rest of high school and college. My thesis claim was that the Hippie Movement couldn't have been nearly as large without the use of drugs and sex. To make my essay more trustworthy, I found and cited reliable sources, and checked my facts using several other websites.
To close off the “Movements Around the World” project, the two classes visited Balboa Park in San Diego. We were able to choose between the Museum of Art and the Museum of Man. I chose the Museum of Man. In the Museum of Man, I learned about how humans expressed themselves throughout history, and it seemed the Hippie Movement was just another way humans expressed themselves. This was obviously different from how Mayans expressed themselves, but the point stands that humans will always find a way to express how they’re feeling or what they want in different ways.
If I could do this project again, I would perhaps learn about how to paint from tutorials, or at least buy my own paint to get the exact colors I wanted. However, for my first attempt, I’m quite proud of the work I created.
